The Disclosure of Others: The Dyadic Effect
Generally, self-disclosure is reciprocal in any interaction. It is more likely to occur if the other person has previously done so. This is the dyadic effect-what one person in a dyad does the other does in response. The dyadic effect in self disclosure takes a sort of spiral form. With each self disclosure prompting an additional self disclosure by the other person, which in turn prompts still more self disclosure and so on. Disclosures made in response to the disclosure of others are generally more intimate than those that are not the result of the dyadic effect (Byrg and Archer 1983).
